Canada's Express Entry system is the fastest route to permanent residence for skilled workers. Your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score is based on four key factors: your age, work experience, education, and English or French language ability. Step 01
Create & complete an online Express Entry profile
You'll create an online Express Entry profile that tells Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) who you are: your skills, work history, education, and language test results. If you qualify for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, or Canadian Experience Class, you'll be ranked against other candidates using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). If you don't already have a valid job offer or provincial nomination, you'll also need to register with Canada's national Job Bank. Every detail in your profile must be accurate — even small errors or omissions can lead to disqualification and a multi-year ban from re-entering the pool, so it pays to get it right the first time.
Step 02
Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Permanent Residence
Once you're in the pool, provincial governments and Canadian employers can view your profile and reach out directly. IRCC regularly issues Invitations to Apply (ITAs) to the highest-ranked candidates and to anyone with a valid job offer or provincial nomination. If you receive an ITA, you'll have 60 days to submit your full application with supporting documents. Once approved, you and your spouse or dependent children can land in Canada as permanent residents. If 12 months pass without an ITA, don't worry — you can update and resubmit your profile to stay in the pool, as long as you still meet the eligibility criteria.
How to Prepare for Express Entry
Before you apply, you'll need to complete an approved English and/or French language test (such as IELTS or CELPIP) and have your post-secondary credentials evaluated through an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) to confirm they meet Canadian standards. It's also important to confirm you're not inadmissible to Canada on criminal or medical grounds — any issues here need to be resolved before you apply, not after.
In short, a complete Express Entry application requires:
Valid language test results (IELTS or CELPIP), and an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) report confirming your foreign education is equivalent to a Canadian credential.
